SER-tool

Like mentioned before, custom bladeworks is about my search to the ultimate blade.A blade or a tool, the difference between both isn’t that big.I have started knifemaking with the idea to make a social accepted tool or knife.I am sure many people like to carry a knife for practical  reasons but many are also limited by the law or the comment of knife-hating people. Here starts my idea to make a tool with the advantages of a knife without any potential weapon characterics.

S.E.R. stands for survival-emergency-rescue and are the basics for this project .

What’s the ideal knife ?

I am sure you all have a favourite knife. No matter how nice, expensive or exclusive a knife could be,  the most important is that in your pocket ! So we need a real “every day carry”.Also an important factor is the overall look.If the knife doesn’t attract you probably won’t buy and use it.All right, where are looking for some compact , lightweight and handy knife for daily use.I believe there’s enough choice on the market …but does it give all you need ? How many people aren’t abusing there knife as a wrench or screwdriver ? Can you always carry it without fear or doubt ?

If were looking for a S.E.R-knife or tool we really need something we can ALWAYS carry, no matter where we are.Maybe we have to look for a new concept and step away from common knife designs .

How about the anatomy ? What extra features exept the cutting edge do you need ?

Many multi tools, folding knives and some typical bicycle tools easily feature 10 components like a small and large blade, wire cutter, needle nose plier, small and large screwdriver, wire cutter, can and bottle opener, … I’m  sure they all have their advantage and they are ” in a way ”perfect. My idea ? Make some tool with less components and keep it all at the minimum in order to keep it strong, compact and light .Less parts makes it also easier in use, safer and foolproof. Also a minimum in parts generally makes it cheaper to built.

What are you going to do with it ?

Many people are easily focused on the blade but for 90% we only use it to cut packaging material and clean our nails. In survival circumstances maybe  to cut a seatbelt, rope, clothes from injured people and few natural materials. But that’s it.So the blade don’t has to be that big if you wanna carry it always .

Which features will be basic ?

To start I would like to include sort of a prybar, adjustable wrench, regular screwdrivers, a small blade, glassbreaker, whistle.Maybe other features like S.O.S symbols and a signal mirror could be involved later.

About the application ?

I guess the tool could be useful for everyone but especially for outdoor people like  : mountaineers , survival people, parachutists, pilots, emergency teams, firemen, police, military. Also people in their work area could use such a tool to cut packing material, tape , etc.

When will I release the prototype ?

Be sure I will go in contest for a design award. It have been working hard in this tool and I believe it’s a good start to get this first in publicity  .I am aiming high with this concept.I think to publish my tool end 2009.
